The most coveted
town on the Cape

Chatham sits at the elbow of Cape Cod where the Atlantic meets Nantucket Sound — a geography that gives it beaches on multiple exposures, a working fishing harbor, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in New England. The town has long attracted people who want the Cape done properly: a genuine Main Street, world-class seafood, an active arts scene, and beaches that are genuinely wild.

Chatham is also the only town on the Cape that is legitimately walkable. The lighthouse, Lighthouse Beach, the Fish Pier, Main Street shops and restaurants, and the Chatham Squire are all within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. Our Chatfield and Barn properties are within a short walk of Hardings Beach. It's a different experience from the car-dependent mid-Cape towns — and most guests who try it never go back.

The wildlife here is exceptional and unscripted. Seals congregate at the Fish Pier every afternoon when the boats come in. Great whites patrol the outer bars — safely observed from shore or the Shark Center. The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, accessible by boat tour, is one of the finest birding sites on the East Coast. None of this requires a reservation or a tour guide. It's just Chatham on a Tuesday.

Our three Chatham vacation rentals cover the full range: a landmark 7-bedroom estate with pool and sauna featured on CBS, a 5-star oceanview retreat with saltwater pool, and a beautifully appointed 4-bedroom home about a mile from Hardings Beach.

Wildlife
Chatham Fish Pier
Come mid-afternoon when the fishing boats return and the seals follow them in. Dozens of seals, right at the dock. It's free, it takes twenty minutes, and guests never forget it. One of the best things to do in Chatham.
Beach
Lighthouse Beach
Below Chatham Light, an ever-changing barrier beach where sandbars and inlets shift with every storm. Not a swimming beach — a walking beach. Bring binoculars. The seals use the outer bar as a resting spot throughout the season.
Science
Atlantic White Shark Conservancy
The Shark Center on Main Street runs interactive exhibits on the great white population off Chatham. More fascinating than it sounds. Kids love it. The research happening here is genuinely world-class.
Dining
Main Street & The Squire
The Chatham Squire has been the town's anchor bar since 1968 — draft beers, clam chowder, lobster rolls, and a room full of locals. The Impudent Oyster is the upscale alternative. Bluefins if you want sushi on the water.
Music
Chatham Band Concerts
Friday nights all summer at Kate Gould Park — the town band, lawn chairs, kids dancing in the grass. One of those genuinely unrepeatable Cape Cod experiences. Free. No tickets. Just show up.

9 beaches.
We know every one.

Chatham's beaches split between Nantucket Sound to the south — warm, calm, family-friendly — and the raw Atlantic exposure to the east. Here are the ones guests ask about most.

Nantucket Sound · West Chatham
Hardings Beach
The benchmark Chatham family beach. Warm, calm Nantucket Sound water, a walking trail to Stage Harbor Light, food trucks in season, and a full bathhouse. The most popular beach in town — for good reason. All three of our Chatham properties are about a mile away.
Tip Arrive before 9am or after 4pm in July and August. The lot fills completely by mid-morning. A $20/day or $75/week non-resident sticker is required.
Atlantic · East Chatham
Lighthouse Beach
Below Chatham Light — the most dramatic beach on the lower Cape. The barrier beach system here is constantly reshaping from storms and tidal action. Not for swimming (strong currents, frequent shark flags), but extraordinary for long walks, sunrise watching, and seal spotting.
Tip Parking at Bridge Street is 30 minutes max. Use the Main Street public lots and walk down. The 10-minute walk is part of the experience.
Nantucket Sound · South Chatham
Cockle Cove Beach
A quieter south-side option with warm, shallow water and views toward Martha's Vineyard on a clear day. Excellent for families with young children. Rarely as crowded as Hardings, and the sunsets face almost due west.
Tip The lot is small. Midweek mornings are your best bet for parking without stress.
Pleasant Bay · North Chatham
Jackknife Beach
A sheltered cove on Pleasant Bay — warm, shallow, calm water and the best dog-friendly option in town. Dogs are welcome before 9am and after 6pm in season, all day in the shoulder season. Free parking along the dirt road entrance.
Tip Tricky to find — look for the unmarked driveway on Route 28 just before the Harwich town line. Worth the effort.
Nantucket Sound · South Chatham
Forest Beach
Chatham's best-kept secret. Feels private even in peak season. No facilities, no lifeguards, but beautiful views and a calm atmosphere that most summer visitors never discover. Good shell collecting and excellent for a quiet morning swim.
Tip Turn onto Forest Beach Road off Route 28 across from The Talkative Pig. Small lot — arrive early or late.
Freshwater · Central Chatham
Oyster Pond Beach
The best free beach option in Chatham — warm, calm freshwater pond with lifeguards, a dock for jumping, picnic tables, and full restrooms. Popular with families and locals. Walking distance from downtown, which solves the parking problem entirely.
Tip No saltwater, but the facilities and accessibility make it the most practical all-ages beach in town. Great for a late-afternoon swim after a day out.

Chatham beach stickers are required at most beaches from late June through Labor Day. Daily passes ($20) are sold at the beach lots. Weekly passes ($75) are available at Chatham Town Hall on George Ryder Road. We'll walk you through logistics before you arrive.
