Things to do in
Dennis, MA

Mayflower Beach at low tide. Corporation Beach at sunset. Scargo Tower at golden hour. A complete local guide to Dennis from the team that manages four luxury rentals here year-round.

Dennis sits at the heart of Cape Cod, spanning five distinct villages — Dennis, Dennis Port, East Dennis, South Dennis, and West Dennis — each with its own character. Together they give you 18 beaches on two bodies of water, a thriving arts scene, excellent seafood, and the kind of unhurried Cape Cod pace that keeps families coming back generation after generation.

With beaches on both Cape Cod Bay to the north and Nantucket Sound to the south, Dennis is uniquely positioned. The Bay side offers dramatic tidal flats, warmer water in midsummer, and world-class sunsets. The Sound side offers calmer surf, longer stretches of sand, and slightly warmer water earlier in the season. Most guests end up visiting both.

Dennis has 18 beaches.
Here are the ones that matter.

Cape Cod Bay · North Dennis
01
Mayflower Beach
The crown jewel of Dennis beaches. Powdery white sand, calm warm water, and — at low tide — miles of tidal flats that stretch so far into the Bay you feel like you are walking to the horizon. A permanent snack bar, restrooms, and lifeguards in season. Get there before 9am in peak summer to secure parking. Worth every early alarm.
Cape Cod Bay · Dennis Village
02
Corporation Beach
A crescent-shaped beauty facing Cape Cod Bay with a protected jetty area that is perfect for families. The best sunset beach in Dennis — the sky turns spectacular over the Bay on clear evenings. Snack bar, playground, and restrooms on-site. Arrive early in summer as the lot fills before 10am on weekends.
Nantucket Sound · West Dennis
03
West Dennis Beach
A mile-long barrier beach on Nantucket Sound — one of the longest in Dennis. Calmer surf than the Bay side, consistently warm water, and a legendary sunset view looking west. Popular with windsurfers and kiteboarders in the afternoon when the southwest breeze picks up. A long walk in either direction at any time of day.
Cape Cod Bay · East Dennis
04
Chapin Memorial Beach
Less crowded and more secluded than Mayflower, Chapin has the same dramatic tidal flats and Bay views with a quieter, more local feel. The walk out at low tide is extraordinary — a mile of wet sand with tide pools, shore birds, and complete silence. A worthwhile morning trip for guests staying in North Dennis.
Nantucket Sound · Dennis Port
05
Sea Street Beach
A Dennis Port neighborhood favorite — smaller and more intimate than West Dennis, never really crowded, with soft sand and calm Sound water. Easy parking and a relaxed vibe. One of the best options for guests at Swan River House, which is a short walk away.
Scargo Lake · South Dennis
06
Scargo Lake Beach
A freshwater alternative to the ocean beaches — Scargo Lake is a 50-acre kettle pond with clear water, a sandy bottom, and a small beach. No salt, no seaweed, no surf — great for young kids or an evening swim. The lake is also stocked for fishing and has a boat launch for kayaks and canoes.

Dennis beach parking stickers are required June 15 through Labor Day. Daily passes ($20), weekly passes ($75), and seasonal passes are available at Mayflower Beach or online at the Town of Dennis website.

The places that give
Dennis its character

Scargo Tower

A 28-foot stone observation tower on the highest hill in Dennis, built in 1929. On a clear day the views reach Cape Cod Bay, Provincetown, Plymouth, and — they say — Boston on the horizon. The climb is short, the payoff is significant. Free to visit, open year-round. At sunset the light over the Bay is extraordinary. Worth building your evening around.

Cape Cod Museum of Art

Founded in 1981 on the grounds of the Cape Playhouse on Route 6A, the museum features rotating exhibitions of contemporary and historic Cape Cod art. The grounds themselves are beautiful — a classic New England campus with sculpture gardens and a working artist colony feel. Free on certain days, always worth checking what is on.

Cape Cinema

A genuinely special place. Built in 1930 on the Cape Playhouse grounds, the Cape Cinema shows independent and art house films in a stunning art deco interior with original murals by Rockwell Kent. One of the oldest continually operating movie theatres in New England. An evening here is about as quintessentially Cape Cod as it gets.

Gray's Beach Boardwalk

A quarter-mile wooden boardwalk extending out over the salt marsh in Yarmouth Port, right on the Dennis border. Technically in Yarmouth but a five-minute drive from most Dennis properties. The boardwalk ends at a platform over Cape Cod Bay — at sunset, the light over the marsh is stunning and the walk takes maybe 20 minutes round trip. Free, always open. Do not skip this.

Bass Hole (Gray's Beach) at Low Tide

At low tide the tidal flat at Bass Hole extends over half a mile into Cape Cod Bay. Walk out to the channel and look back at the marsh, the boardwalk, and the skyline of the Bay — it is one of the most beautiful scenes on the Mid-Cape. Check the tide chart and time your visit for an hour after low tide.

Route 6A — The Old King's Highway

The historic stretch of Route 6A through Dennis and East Dennis is one of the most beautiful roads on Cape Cod — lined with antique shops, art galleries, farm stands, and beautifully preserved 18th-century sea captain homes. A slow drive or bike ride along 6A on a summer morning is a perfect start to any day.

Cycling · All Skill Levels
01
Cape Cod Rail Trail
The Rail Trail starts in Dennis and runs 25 miles to Wellfleet through Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, and beyond. Flat, paved, and spectacular — passing cranberry bogs, salt ponds, kettle ponds, and forests of scrub oak and pitch pine. Rent bikes in Dennis or Harwich and pick a segment. The stretch through Nickerson State Park in Brewster is the best single section.
Kayaking · Any Day
02
Swan River & Bass River Kayaking
The Swan River in Dennis Port connects to Nantucket Sound through a gorgeous tidal estuary. Launch from the bridge on Swan River Road and paddle south through the marsh toward the Sound. Bass River, on the Dennis-Yarmouth line, is equally beautiful and longer — a full afternoon paddle. Rentals available at several outfitters in town.
Sailing · Book Ahead
03
Sesuit Harbor
The working harbor in East Dennis has sailing charters, powerboat rentals, and fishing trips departing daily in season. The Sesuit Harbor Cafe right on the dock is excellent for lunch — lobster rolls and fried clams with harbor views. One of the most authentic Cape Cod scenes you will find anywhere on the Mid-Cape.
Fishing · All Season
04
Sport Fishing
Dennis is excellent striped bass and bluefish territory. Surf casting off West Dennis Beach and the jetties at Corporation Beach is productive from May through October. Charter boats run out of Sesuit Harbor and Bass River for deeper water species including bluefin tuna in summer. Half-day trips book up fast on summer weekends.
Nature · Free
05
Dennis Conservation Trails
Dennis has over 1,000 acres of conservation land with a network of free walking trails through pine barrens, kettle ponds, and salt marsh. The Crowe's Pasture trails in East Dennis lead to a remote beach on Cape Cod Bay that is only accessible on foot — one of the true hidden gems in the area.
Summer · Free
06
Blueberry Picking
Several pick-your-own blueberry farms operate in Dennis and South Dennis through July and August. High-bush varieties, friendly farmers, $4.50 a basket. An hour in the morning before the beach is a Cape Cod tradition that guests with kids especially love. Call ahead to confirm opening hours and availability.

The Dennis
dining scene

Dennis has a genuinely strong restaurant scene for a town its size — anchored by excellent seafood, a few standout destination spots, and the kind of casual classics that become annual rituals for returning guests.

Ocean House Restaurant
The consensus best restaurant in Dennis — an oceanfront dining room in Dennis Port with unobstructed views of Nantucket Sound. The food matches the setting: elevated Cape Cod seafood with serious technique. Reservations open 30 days in advance on OpenTable and fill within hours for peak season weekends. Book the moment you confirm your rental.
Oceanfront · Destination
Swan River Seafood Restaurant
A Dennis Port institution on the Swan River — raw bar, fresh catches, and classic New England seafood in a casual waterfront setting. The fried seafood platter is among the best on the Cape, and watching the boats come in from the deck while waiting for your table is a proper Cape Cod moment.
Waterfront · Classic Seafood
Sesuit Harbor Cafe
Right on the dock at Sesuit Harbor in East Dennis. Lobster rolls, chowder, fried clams, and harbor views at picnic tables. Casual, fresh, and completely unpretentious — exactly what a Cape Cod seafood shack should be. Lines form at lunch; the wait is worth it.
Casual · Harborside
Scargo Cafe
A Dennis Village fixture on Route 6A — consistent, warm, and reliably good. Upscale-casual in feel, with a menu that covers everything from chowder to rack of lamb. One of the rare restaurants on the Cape that feels both special and relaxed at the same time. Perfect for a summer dinner without the production of a reservation-required destination.
American · Year-Round Favorite
The Marshside Restaurant
Views over Sesuit Creek from a classic Cape Cod dining room. Excellent chowder, fresh fish, and a breakfast/brunch service on weekends that draws a loyal local crowd. A reliable choice any time of day with one of the better water views in Dennis.
Waterfront · Breakfast to Dinner
Ice Cream Smuggler
Hand-churned ice cream in Dennis Village, famous enough to have been featured on Food Network. The sundaes are extraordinary and the flavors are creative. A required stop after any beach day, and genuinely one of the best ice cream spots on the entire Cape.

Dennis by
season

Summer
July and August are peak — all 18 beaches open, all restaurants running, Rail Trail packed. Book everything well in advance. The energy is exceptional but parking and traffic require patience, especially on holiday weekends.
Shoulder
Late June and September are the sweet spot. Beaches still beautiful, restaurants still open, crowds significantly thinner. Water temperature peaks in late August and stays warm into September. The best value weeks of the summer.
Off-Season
October through May — quiet, atmospheric, and increasingly popular. Dogs welcome on all beaches. Route 6A antique shopping and gallery browsing at an unhurried pace. Several restaurants stay open year-round. A completely different and genuinely beautiful experience.
Year-Round
Scargo Tower, the Rail Trail, Scargo Lake, Gray's Beach Boardwalk, and Route 6A are worth visiting in any season. Dennis rewards the off-season visitor more than almost any other town on the Cape.

From the team
that lives here

Mayflower Beach at low tide is non-negotiable. Check the tide chart before you go — the flats at low tide are a completely different experience from high tide. The walk out to the channel at low tide is one of the best things you can do on the entire Cape.

Corporation Beach at sunset. Get there an hour before sunset with drinks and a blanket. The sky over Cape Cod Bay is extraordinary on clear evenings. This is the best free activity in Dennis.

Scargo Tower in the morning. The tower gets busy midday — go in the first hour after opening for the best light and an empty platform. The views north to the Bay are spectacular.

Book Ocean House 30 days out. Reservations open on OpenTable exactly 30 days in advance. Set a reminder the morning you want to book — tables disappear within the first hour.

Parking fills early. In peak summer, Mayflower and Corporation lots are full by 9–9:30am on sunny weekends. Arrive early or plan a midweek morning visit.

The Rail Trail starts here. Rent bikes and ride east toward Brewster — the first 8 miles from Dennis through South Harwich and into Brewster is the most beautiful section.
